India Nichole Nelson, 25, was killed outside a gate to Naval Station Norfolk in Virginia around 7pm on Monday, after she was in a car wreck with another vehicle driven by her husband and shot him.
The husband, who has not been publicly identified, was treated and released at a hospital.
Both he and his deceased wife are Navy sailors assigned to units based out of Naval Station Norfolk, military officials confirmed.
Nelson, who was originally from New York and enlisted in 2015, was a nuclear technician assigned to the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower Aircraft Carrier, whose home port is Norfolk, Navy spokesman Matthew Allen said.
The circumstances leading to the altercation and shooting are unclear, but police are calling the incident a domestic dispute.
The Norfolk Police Department said that when officers arrived to investigate the car crash Nelson fired on her husband with a gun and officers engaged her and returned fire, killing her.
The incident took place directly outside a gate of Naval Station Norfolk, the largest naval station in world and home port to five US aircraft carrier strike groups.
