If you thought it was only in Mombasa where white men are milked dry by our Kenyan sisters you are wrong, wait until you read the sad story of Barry Humber from England.
Barry arrived in Kenya in 1977 and settled in the Western region where he was working with missionaries as a constructor.
“MY REQUEST WAS TO STAY IN KENYA FOR ONE YEAR ONLY BUT RETIRED PRESIDENT MOI (VICE PRESIDENT BY THEN) ASKED ME TO STAY IN KENYA AND I AGREED TO.”
He had already found a wife and he didn’t hesitate.
“I BOUGHT 30.38 ACRES OF LAND AND THE TITLE DEED WAS UNDER MY WIFE’S NAME BECAUSE I WAS NOT A CITIZEN OF KENYA.”
The mzungu went back to England and sold all his properties and came back to Kenya to start a new life in 1978. But when he came back, things had changed. His wife Elizabeth had run away with another man.
“I CAME BACK AND HAD NOWHERE TO LIVE. SHE HAD SOLD PART OF THE LAND AND THE FAMILY HOUSE WHERE WE USED TO STAY WITH OUR FIVE CHILDREN. I HAD TO STAY AT A LOCAL HOTEL IN KITALE FOR A YEAR. “
Barry tried to trace Elizabeth and get a land which she sold to no avail.
He was forced to sell the 12-acres of the remaining land to pay the loan which Elizabeth took from a bank before she escaped with a mystery man.
Barry is living in abject poverty hoping that he will get back his money or land that his wife sold.
Tea and a piece of ugali is the only meal he can afford.
