Nicole Sifrit, of Iowa, wrote a heartbreaking Facebook post announcing Mariana’s death on Tuesday morning.
She wrote: ‘Our princess Mariana Reese Sifrit gained her angel wings at 8.41am this morning in her daddy’s arms and her mommy right beside her. She is now no longer suffering and is with the Lord.
‘Thank you to everyone who has followed her journey and supported us through this. In her 18 days of life she made a huge impact on the world and we hope with Mariana’s Story we save numerous newborns life. R.I.P. sweet angel.’
Mariana was diagnosed with viral meningitis caused by the herpes virus on July 7.
The couple had to leave their own wedding early to transport Mariana to the University of Iowa Hospital when she fell ill.
Her condition deteriorated quickly.
A few days ago, Nicole posted this update on Facebook: ‘My heart is crushed, my baby is declining fast! She has no brain activity and her lungs and heart are failing along with her kidneys and liver. They are running out of options for her.’
She received several blood transfusions but was warned by doctors to prepare for the worst.
A GoFundMe page has been launched for the family.
