The US president said his country would be ‘delighted’ to help the terminally ill baby, whose life support is set to be switched off.

His announcement on Twitter follows Pope Francis pledging his support, calling for Chris Gard and Connie Yates to be able to ‘accompany and treat their child until the end’.

Charlie’s parents had hoped to take their 10-month-old son, who suffers from the rare genetic condition mitochondrial depletion syndrome, to the USA for experimental treatment.

Wading into the case, Trump tweeted: ‘If we can help little #CharlieGard, as per our friends in the UK and the Pope, we would be delighted to do so.’
