Police have arrested a Texas woman for allegedly stealing a ring off of a dead woman’s finger, PEOPLE confirms.
Kalynn Homfeld of Odessa, Texas, was arrested on Tuesday after being caught on camera allegedly taking a ring off of a corpse at an open-casket memorial service on Friday.
Family members of Lois Hicks were hosting a memorial ceremony honoring for the late 88-year-old Homfeld came into the funeral home and allegedly stole a ring from Hicks’ finger.
Odessa police released a video Homfeld entering the Sunset Memorial Gardens and Funeral Home on Friday afternoon.
Cpl. Steve LeSueur of the Odessa Police Department says thanks to a tip, police were able to track down Homfeld.
Homfeld was taken in for questioning Tuesday afternoon, during which she apologized for allegedly stealing the ring. She was then arrested and charged.
It is unclear what the motive was for Homfeld’s alleged actions. The ring, which has yet to be recovered, was only worth $10, LeSueur tells PEOPLE.
“Regardless [of its price] it’s still the principal – if you steal a $10 or $10,000 ring you’re still committing a felony in the state of Texas,” LeSueur says.
Homfeld has been charged with theft from a human corpse, a state felony, LeSueur says.
Sunset Memorial Gardens and Funeral Home worked closely with police.
“We feel for the family and are saddened by this crime,” an employee of the funeral home tells PEOPLE.
Homfeld has not yet entered a plea, Chief Deputy Roddy Eaton of Ector County Sheriff’s Office tells PEOPLE.
LaSueur tells PEOPLE Hicks’ family is relieved Homfeld has been arrested but is still grieving their loss.
“They seem relieved but it’s obviously one thing when you steal something and another when you steal something from a deceased person,” LaSeuer says. “We’re just glad we got the suspect and she’s in custody.”
Hicks’ family could not be reached for comment.
