Red-carpet beauty pro Takisha Sturdivant-Drew will be upping the faux-hair quality quotient with celebrity-inspired extensions “as good as gold.”
Extensions may be Hollywood’s not-so-secret weapon for beautiful hair, but the quality isn’t always up to snuff for celebrity hair pros. So Takisha Sturdivant-Drew, who works with Scandal star Kerry Washington, Leona Lewis and Lucy Liu (she was also the key hairstylist on CBS’ Elementary), took matters into her own hands. Three years ago, she began researching extensions, and on Feb. 18, TSD Hair will debut exclusively on TSDHair.com.
The New York-based hairstylist talked to Pret-a-Reporter exclusively about her new line and who in Hollywood rocks faux hair particularly well.
Pret-a-Reporter: Hollywood’s top hairstylists love using hair pieces on clients — why are they such an in-demand styling tool?
Takisha Sturdivant-Drew: They love extensions because it’s a quick change that adds drama and becomes a totally different look with texture and color. It’s amazing what you can do with length, color, texture, braids, twists and ponytails.
So what made you decide to start your own line of extensions and what makes them different?
I couldn’t find high-quality, long-lasting hair — hair that lasts for at least a year. TSD Hair is different from everyone else because it’s 100 percent natural, it doesn’t shed at all, it’s soft, manageable and most importantly, very high quality. TSD Hair is real human hair that comes in several textures, so it’s a great choice for all ethnicities.
How do you style and apply them?
You can use heat, gel, hair spray — and nothing will happen to the hair. The hair can be taped or braided in and used as clip-ins. You can put the hair in all by yourself at home or have a pro do it for you.
What styles are available?
Currently we offer straight, spring wave, deep wave and kinky curl styles. I will be able to customize the color as well. They start at $150, depending on length and color.
Have you used them on any of your celebrity clientele yet?
Not yet, but they can’t wait to wear the hair — I even have orders placed already!
Extensions get a bad wrap for causing hair damage and loss. How do you avoid this?
The braiding technique [for application] is the healthiest method. Stay away from glue because that’s definitely not good for your hair and causes hair loss and a lot of damage. You can avoid damage by going to a professional who knows how to protect your hair when putting in extensions.
Any other tips for wearing extensions?
Just make sure the secret isn’t showing. The hair should always blend well so no one can tell the difference between your hair and the commercial hair. It should always look natural—that’s where the high-quality hair comes in.
Speaking of looking natural — who rocks extensions really well in Hollywood?
Jessica Alba, Beyonce and Jennifer Lopez.
