There’s a holiday resort that was specifically built for obese people. The venue in Eleuthera, Bahamas, has wider doorways, sturdier chairs and reinforced beds.
And the buffet is always topped up with the tastiest foods whether it be breakfast, lunch or dinner. ‘The Resort’ is the brainchild of James King, who came up with the idea in 2003 after he saw an obese person fall through a beach chair and then have to pay $150 (£114) to replace it. ‘It’s a place where you can come and have a good holiday without any judgement whatsoever,’ he told the Independent.
The venue, which has a private beach and opened in 2005, is featured in a new ITV program called The 18-30 Stone Holiday. The premise is eight people take a vacation at the resort to confront issues they have with being overweight. Married couple Adam and Ami Flahery took part in the show.
‘I could jump in the pool and not worry about how big a splash I made,’ 24 stone Ami told the Sun. ‘Or I could lie on a sun lounger which was made from strong Brazilian wood, so I didn’t have to worry about breaking it. But owner Mr King added The Resort wasn’t all about fun and games, with staff offering activities and therapy that challenged guests’ perceptions about their bodies. The 18-30 Stone Holiday airs tonight on ITV 1 at 9pm.
