CARS.COM — From “Freddy vs. Jason” to “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” it’s fun to pit a pair of prominent members of a given field (be it superheroing or serial killing) against one another. With the recent debut of the 2018 Ford Expedition, the comparison that came to mind is full-size, body-on-frame SUVs; how does the new Expedition measure up to its rival, the Chevrolet Tahoe?
In terms of exterior styling, some of our editors who saw the Expedition at the Chicago Auto Show perceived an increased similarity between it and the Tahoe. While not everyone agreed, the pair do bear a resemblance in their greenhouses’ long, flat, narrow look — both seeming to rise gradually as the eye moves front to back — and likewise in their trapezoidal second- and third-row windows and rear-roof overhangs.
In front, the Expedition seems more like a tour of styling cues from other Ford trucks and SUVs. The hood borrows heavily from its platform-mate, the F-150, while the grater-like grille and lower front bumper have more in common with the Explorer SUV, as do the wheel arches.
We don’t have specs yet for the new Expedition beyond it being 1 inch longer and 1 inch wider than the outgoing model, which would put it at about 207.5 inches long and 79.8 inches wide. That’s compared to the Tahoe’s 204-inch length and 80.5-inch width.
Under the hood, the new Expedition gets a new twin-turbo 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission. Ford hasn’t released full specs yet, but the old twin-turbo 3.5-liter V-6 EcoBoost made 365 horsepower and 420 pounds-feet of torque and was mated to a six-speed automatic. The 2017 Tahoe is powered by a 5.3-liter V-8 that makes 355 hp and 383 pounds-feet of torque, and is also mated to a six-speed automatic. Fuel economy estimates likewise were not yet available, but the 2017 Expedition loses that battle with 15/21/18 mpg city/highway/combined compared with the Tahoe’s 16/23/19 mpg.
Do you notice a resemblance between the two SUVs? Or are some of us here at Cars.com seeing things?
