Zendaya is no stranger to sharing her feelings with fans. And now she’s baring her sole — well, soles, from her new footwear line, Daya by Zendaya. The K.C. Undercover actress is launching her inaugural shoe line this spring, titled after her own childhood nickname.
The 19-year-old superstar collaborated on the collection with her stylist Law Roach with one goal in mind: Make shoes for “all women.”
“We kind of wanted to create classic silhouettes and things that I think everyone would be into while also making them a little bit different,” Zendaya told PEOPLE about the collection at a launch party celebrating the line in Los Angeles. The celebration was filmed for an upcoming episode of David Tutera’sCELEBrations for WE tv. Her goal was to add “a little bit of edge and our own personal touch,” to traditional shoe silhouettes. (The price point is good too. All shoes are under $225.)
“We wanted to do something real and something tangible for the people who love Zendaya, who follow her and want to have a small piece of her,” Roach added. As for their design inspiration, instead of looking at present-day Hollywood, Zendaya and Roach instinctually went to “the past.”
“I think that everything that was cool becomes cool all over again so we do a lot of studying of people like Cher, people like Bianca Jagger,” Zendaya shared.
But she quickly learned shoe designing is “hard” and a lot more time consuming than shoe shopping.
“We worked very hard and we put a lot of time, effort. There’s so much detail,” she explained. “A lot of things that you don’t like about like, ‘Oh you need to pick that?’ Like you need to pick the sole color, what shade of nude it’s going to be. It’s so, so detailed.”
